2021 Theme: Roses and Other Flowering Shrubs Roses and ornamental shrubs have long been popular themes in The Prairie Garden. Our “Roses” edition of 2008 is now sold out. Yet readers continue asking us for information on the topic. Since 2008, important new collections of hardy shrub roses such as the Canadian Artists and 49th Parallel series have come on the market. Moroever, plant developers in our region have played an outsize role in the breeding, selection, and trialling of not just roses, but all kinds of hardy flowering shrubs for the home garden: lilacs, potentillas, Prunus species, and so on. The Prairies are also the original home of many native woody species, including wild roses, that can play valuable roles in our landscapes. With Dr. Philip Ronald of Jeffries Nurseries as our guest editor, we plant to shine a spotlight on these useful and beautiful shrubs. A document detailing the submission guidelines can be found here. ~ Article Submission Deadline: April 1st 2020 ~ Photos from the 2020 growing season may be submitted as late as July 15, 2020, but earlier submission is preferred. Articles submitted after the deadline will only be considered for publication in the 2021 book if space is available. Please contact the editor (editor@theprairiegarden.com) with your story idea before preparing your submission. We look forward to hearing your stories and seeing your gardens.
