2021 Theme: Flowering Shrubs, with a
Special Feature on Roses
Flowering shrubs and roses have long been popular themes in The Prairie Garden. For its 70th anniversary edition in 2009, the Prairie Garden featured Deciduous Shrubs. Since that time, hundreds of exciting new flowering shrub cultivars have emerged, many with relevance to prairie gardeners. Our “Roses” edition of 2008 is now sold out, yet readers continue asking us for information on the topic. Since 2008, important new collections of hardy shrub roses such as the Canadian Artists and 49th Parallel series have come to market. Plant developers in our region have played an important role in the breeding, selection, and trialling of all kinds of hardy flowering shrubs for the prairie landscape, including roses. With Dr. Philip Ronald of Jeffries Nurseries as our guest editor, we plan to shine a spotlight on these useful and beautiful shrubs in our 2021 edition.
